What Is a Dental Crown and When Is One Necessary?

Natural teeth are made of two main parts: a root and a crown. A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that fits over the entire crown to restore any lost tooth structure. Dental crowns are often recommended in the following situations:

  • For large cavities that can’t be repaired with fillings.
  • For teeth that have been weakened by multiple fillings and are prone to breaking.
  • Dental implants are restored with dental crowns.
  • After a root canal, a tooth is susceptible for reinfection without protection and support. A dental crown will fortify the treated tooth.
  • When a missing tooth is replaced with a bridge, dental crowns are put on the two adjacent teeth to serve as support.

What Is the Dental Crown Procedure Like?

Traditionally, dental crowns are made in an outside dental lab and require two separate visits (a couple of weeks apart). With CEREC, we custom-make your crown right here while you wait, so you’ll only need to come in for a single, two-hour appointment. Here’s how it works:

  • Dr. Donohue or Dr. Savas will numb the area and prepare your tooth by removing any damaged portions and reducing it in size. This ensures that your new crown will fit perfectly and won’t look or feel bulky.
  • Then we’ll take impressions by digitally scanning your teeth (no more uncomfortable putty impressions!). These images are then loaded into the computer, which designs your crown with a high level of accuracy and precision.
  • Then our CEREC machine uses that design to craft your crown out of high-quality, metal-free Emax material that provides durability and beautiful, natural-looking results.
  • The last step is cementing your new crown into place and making sure it feels great.

How Much Does a Dental Crown Cost?

Dental crowns are a wonderful investment in your dental health. They not only beautifully restore your teeth but also last an average of 15 years (or more) with basic care. That said, everyone is unique, so the total cost of your treatment plan will vary, depending on your specific needs. If you’d like an individual estimate, give us a call to schedule a consultation with Dr. Donohue or Dr. Savas. After he’s done an exam, we’ll be able to explain your fees and discuss insurance or financing as needed.
